If you’ve ever opened your laptop to book a flight and immediately felt overwhelmed… you’re not alone.
Prices fluctuate. Routes change. And somehow, the same flight costs different amounts depending on where you look.
But here’s the truth:
Booking flights doesn’t have to be stressful or expensive.
With the right tools—and a little strategy—you can travel smarter, save money, and create memories of a lifetime without breaking the bank.
Let me show you exactly how I do it.

Step 1: Start with Google Flights
This is where I begin every single flight search.
Why I love it:
- You can see a full calendar of prices
- It shows the cheapest days to fly instantly
- You can track price changes
- The Explore Map helps you find deals if you’re flexible
Pro Tip:
- Don’t lock yourself into exact dates right away. Shift your trip by even 1–2 days—you could save hundreds.
- Flying on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday (fewer people choose to travel for business or leisure on these days, resulting in lower demand and cheaper fares.
- Book 1 to 3 months out for domestic flights or 2 to 8 months out for international flights.
- Use Incognito Mode or a VPN: Searching for flights in a private browsing tab may prevent tracking cookies from artificially inflating prices.

Step 2: Double-Check with Hopper
After I find a flight on Google Flights, I go to Hopper.
Why? Because Hopper tells you when to book.
- It predicts whether prices will go up or down
- It tells you to “Buy Now” or “Wait.”
- It sends alerts when prices drop
Real talk: This alone can save you $50–$200+ per flight.

Step 3: Explore More with Skyscanner
This is where you find those “Wait… how is this flight this cheap?” moments.
What makes Skyscanner powerful:
- “Cheapest Month” feature
- “Everywhere” search and flexible dates (perfect for flexible travelers)
- Finds budget airline combinations that other sites miss
Pro Tip:
Sometimes Skyscanner shows cheaper booking options through third-party sites—but always check airline reviews before booking.

Step 4: Use Credit Card Points, Miles, or Rewards
This is how you go from budget traveler to luxury on a smart budget.
If you’re not using points… you’re leaving money on the table.
Here’s how I approach it:
- Use a travel rewards credit card for everyday spending
- Earn points, miles, or cashback
- Redeem points for flights (sometimes FREE or heavily discounted)
Example:
A $929.40 flight could cost:
- $0 out of pocket using points
- Or $290.37 + points instead of full price

Get 40,000 Membership Rewards® points after you’re approved for a new American Express Card and make $3,000 in purchases within the first 6 months of Card Membership. Apply here.
Additionally, you can use point.me. to find the best flight options using your points.

BONUS: Use Airfordable

Your friendly reminder, it’s time to book your flight. With Airfordable, you can secure your ticket for just a fraction of the cost upfront and pay the rest in easy installments before you take off.
How it works:
- You find your flight first (Google Flights or airline)

Additionally, if you have an American Express card, you can use the Plan It feature. Plan It lets you divide purchases of $100 or more into equal monthly installments with a fixed fee. I used the Plan It feature to purchase two round-trip tickets to Jamaica. Hurricane Melissa happened in the country, so we changed our plans to Mexico.
